Celebrating A Global ‘Eid


The Messenger of Allah (blessing of Allah and peace be upon him) said,
ﺇﻥ ﻟﻜﻞ ﻗﻮﻡ ﻋﻴﺪﺍ ، ﻭﺇﻥ ﻋﻴﺪﻧﺎ ﻫﺬﺍ ﺍﻟﻴﻮﻡ (صحيح البخاري)
“Every people have an ‘Eid and this is our ‘Eid.” ( Sahih al-Bukhari)

What is ‘Eid?

‘Eid is a day in which there is a gathering. The word being derived from عاد يعود (‘aada – ya’oodu) he returned, he is returning, as if they are returning to it i.e ‘Eid. Or it is derived from العادة (‘aadah) custom or habit. (Sheikh ‘Alee Hasan)

Ibn al-‘Arabee said, “‘Eid was named ‘Eid because it returns every year with renewed happiness.” (Lisan ul ‘Arab)
